at Skokie Public Library

From time to time, both full and part time job openings occur. Positions include supervisory and non-supervisory, librarians, information assistants, computer assistants, catalogers, shelvers, clerks, and maintenance personnel.

Part-time volunteer opportunities are also available at Skokie Public Library. These opportunities may be regularly scheduled, or may occur on an as-needed basis for special projects. Anyone over the age of 14 may apply to be a volunteer. Volunteer opportunities may include reading to the blind, helping patrons use computers, clerical responsibilities, assisting children with crafts, helping librarians plan programming for teens or other patrons, or cleaning library videos.

Applications for paid positions are only accepted for positions listed below. Applications for volunteer positions are available Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm in the Administration Office on the third floor of the Library. Completed applications are kept on file for one year and are often the primary source for filling job openings.

Readers' Services (RS) Librarian
Full-time

    Includes evenings and weekends

If you're the type of person who can't stop recommending your favorite books, then you need to join the Adult Services staff as our Readers' Services Librarian. We're seeking an energetic, creative, and passionate librarian who loves reading, downloading, and discussing books. The RS Librarian should be knowledgeable about the latest reading devices, trends in libraries, and the greater literary world. The RS Librarian should also enjoy working with authors and planning literary events including our popular reading programs. Strong teamwork skills are needed as the this position will work closely with the Audiovisual Librarian and the Adult Services Manager on implementing services for our adult patrons. A passion for customer service is a must as the RS Librarian will assist patrons with readers services, audiovisual, reference, and information questions at all public adult desks.

Requirements:

  • MLS from an ALA-accredited library school
  • At least two years of public library experience, including readers' advisory and reference experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Job functions:

  • Coordinates the services provided in the Readers' Service area in collaboration with the Adult Services Manager
  • Assists Adult Services Manager in evaluating RS staff
  • Promotes increased use of RS by encouraging proactive interactions with patrons
  • Continues to develop a broad knowledge of fiction and literature by reading widely
  • Develops standards and guidelines, in conjunction with Adult Services Manager, for responsive RS service
  • Trains staff in RS services and procedures
  • Oversees reading programs
  • Manages book discussion groups and facilitates book discussions
  • Plans author events
  • Serves as the library liaison to the Local Writers
  • Assists patrons with downloading questions and trains staff and patrons on new services
  • Oversees management of RS Desk and makes purchase recommendations about RS reference tools, including electronic resources
  • Implements effective merchandising of all materials in RS area by use of creative and attention-catching promotional methods, under the direction of the Adult Services Manager
  • Creates and maintains appropriate aids, including bibliographies, bookmarks, and other promotional materials, to facilitate responsive service at the RS Desk

Salary range: $45,635 to $68,453

Customer Services Assistant
Part-time

   Mondays from 3:00 to 7:00pm
   Thursdays from 5:00 to 9:00pm
   Saturdays from 2:00 to 6:00pm

Skokie Public Library is seeking a Customer Services Assistant who is friendly, outgoing, and likes helping people. The successful candidate is a team player who can think quickly and engage well with others, has at least two years of customer services experience, and is passionate about providing excellent customer service.

As a member of the Customer Services Team, you will greet people with a smile, welcome them into the library, help customers with their accounts, assist with self-checkout, direct them to their destination, and answer the telephone with a smile and provide information.

Requirements:

  • High school degree or equivalency with some college preferred
  • At least two years of experience in a library or retail environment strongly preferred
  • Basic keyboard and typing skills
  • Excellent oral communication skills
  • Can lift up to 50 pounds and push a book cart up to 150 pounds
  • Familiarity with a foreign language is desirable

Hourly rate of $16.50

Hands-On Technology Mentor
Part-time

   Two temporary (November thru February) positions are available
   Includes afternoons, evenings, and weekends - totals 9 hours per week for each position

Come join our innovative library in its most daring project yet! This position is perfect for tinkers, hackers, makers, artists and, above all else, sharers of knowledge. You will be in a space helping learners use 3D printers, robotics, and much more. You need to be excited to learn.

Duties:

  • Provide drop-in technology assistance
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and requirements:

  • Outgoing personality
  • Teaching and/or coaching experience
  • Experience with children and junior high students
  • Very strong knowledge with computers, technology, or engineering.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Willingness to take direction

Hourly rate of $9.50
