Niles West High School, grade 12
Ode to the Girl I Never Talked to on the Bus
My head pounds like a heart,
So I lean it against the frosted school bus window,
The muscles in my brain relax at my makeshift ice pack.
My skull loosens.
The humming grind of gears ohms into my ears.
My eyes find solace behind my eyelids.
This fourteen-and-a-half minute bus ride
Is slow enough to lull me to sleep, but
Bumpy enough to keep me awake.
I sigh softly
And write my name in the steamed up window.
